Single Hung
The Series 57 Single Hung window features a fixed top sash and a bottom operating sash that raise and lower for ventilation and tilt inward for cleaning and maintenance.

Sun Vinyl Single Hungs feature a sash-over-sash design where the bottom sash raises and lowers for ventilation purposes, as well as tilts inward for easy access to the exterior glass surface from inside the room. This can make it easier to clean your windows. The top sash is a fixed lite and does not open or tilt. The bottom sash tilts in by activating the finger-release latches and pulling the top of the sash toward you. The side jambs house the spring balance system. The tilting action of the sash is achieved by the combination of a pair of sash pins, located near the bottom of each side of the sash, and a pair of balance shoes located in the jambs. The balance shoes feature a locking action that supplies tension within the jamb track when the sash is tilted 90°. This feature is useful to help prevent the bottom of the sash from moving up or down while the sash is tilted for cleaning. It will also hold the shoes and springs in position when you choose to remove the sash completely from the window.

Jamb Depth
The standard jamb depth is 1-3/4”. A jamb depth of 4-9/16" is achieved with interior wood extensions. See Jamb Options for more information.

More About Our VinylConfigurations include a standard 50/50 sash split as well 40/60 Cottage and 60/40 Oriel proportions. Double Hung windows can be mulled together for multi-wide units or with compatible-sized Fixed Lites.

Single Hung hardware consists of a sash lock, finger-release sash tilt latches, a spring balance system with locking-when-tilted balance shoes, and interlocking sash pivot pins or tabs. A window-opening control device, also known as a WOCD, is also available.

Jamb Depth
Sun’s new construction vinyl products have a standard jamb depth (thickness) of 1-3/4" from the back of the nail fin.
Jamb Extensions
For deeper wall construction interior wood extensions can be added to the jamb up to a total jamb depth of 6-9/16". These extensions are applied at the factory. The wood is finger-jointed paint grade. It is available with no finish, primed, or painted white. Note: Jamb Extensions are available in 1/8" increments up to 6-9/16" total jamb depth.

Screen OptionsVertical Raise and Lower Sash Operation
Single Hung windows feature a top fixed-sash and operating bottom sash. The bottom sash is placed towards the interior and bypasses the top fixed sash when raised for ventilation. The checkrail is the meeting point where the two closed sashes overlap and seal against each other.
Tilt-In Sash
The single-hung window features a Tilt-In Sash. This allows access to the exterior surface of the sash from the inside of the home or building. This can be helpful for cleaning or servicing purposes. Once tilted, the sash can also be easily removed from the window, again for cleaning or servicing purposes or to open up access through the window opening.
Locking-When-Tilted Sash Balance Shoes
When the sash is tilted to approximately 90°, the balance shoes tighten against the jamb track to help keep the sash stable in that position. This can help while you hold the sash in place. It will also keep the balance shoes in that position if you remove the sash.
