A double hung is the traditional sash-over-sash, raise, and lower window. The two sashes overlap near the middle of the window to form a check rail where they lock together. One or two cam-action locks, depending on the size of the window, secure the sashes. A pair of finger-release tilt latches engage the side sash tracks and can be disengaged to tilt the sash inward for cleaning or other access. Locking-when-tilted balance shoes help hold the sash in place when tilted.
Traditional Block and Tackle balances assist in raising, lowering, and holding the sashes in place when operating. A hybrid balance system is available on oversized units. Vinyl Jamb Tracks that house the balance system are concealed within each side jamb.

Jamb Depth
The standard jamb depth is 4-9/16”. A jamb depth of 6-9/16" is achieved with 2" extensions. Additional jamb options are available. See Jamb Options for more information.

Exterior Color Options
An extruded aluminum exterior casing and trim system is available on our clad windows and doors to enhance the visual appeal of the windows and doors. Available in a variety of trim and casing profiles, these extrusions add a dimensional accent to the product and the home or building.
Exterior Trim OptionsConfigurations include a standard 50/50 sash split as well 40/60 Cottage and 60/40 Oriel proportions. Double Hung windows can be mulled together for multi-wide units or with compatible-sized Fixed Lites.

Our clad-wood products feature clear pine interiors that are ideally suited for staining or painting. Choose to have your windows and doors delivered without any interior finish so that you can stain or paint them yourself or have them primed or painted at the factory with your choice of one of our standard interior finish colors.
Sun uses black jamb covers as standard on windows with factory-applied black interior finish: white jamb covers as standard on windows with factory-applied white interior finish; and tan jamb covers as standard on all other interior finish options.

Hardware Options

Historically Accurate Details
Historically accurate details, including a tall bottom rail on the bottom sash and top rail on the top sash, as well as a wider frame appearance, gives the Architectural Double Hung a traditional appeal. These details are important in restoration projects where historical representation is desired.
Vertical Raise and Lower Sash Operation
Double Hung windows feature a pair of sashes, one hung above the other. The top sash is placed towards the exterior of the window frame, while the bottom sash is placed towards the interior. This allows them to pass by each other when the bottom sash is raised to open or the top sash is lowered to open. The checkrail is the meeting point where the two closed sashes overlap and seal against each other.
Tilt-In Sashes
All Sun double-hung windows feature Tilt-In Sashes. This allows access to the exterior surface of the sash from the inside of the home or building. This can be helpful for cleaning or servicing purposes. Once tilted, the sashes can also be easily removed from the window, again for cleaning or servicing purposes or to open up access through the window opening.
Traditional Block and Tackle Balance System
The Balance System helps to compensate for the weight of the sash to make it easier to raise and lower. It also helps to keep it in position when you reach the amount of opening desired.
The Architectural double hung uses a Traditional Block and Tackle balance system in our standard-sized units and a Hybrid balance system in our Monumental sized units.
Hybrid Balance System for Monumental Sizes
The Balance System helps to compensate for the weight of the sash to make it easier to raise and lower. It also helps to keep it in position when you reach the amount of opening desired.
The Architectural double hung uses a Hybrid balance system in our Monumental sized units. This provides the additional weight bearing required by these larger units.
Locking-When-Tilted Sash Balance Shoes
When the sash is tilted to approximately 90°, the balance shoes tighten against the jamb track to help keep the sash stable in that position. This can help while you hold the sash in place. It will also keep the balance shoes in that position if you remove the sash.
